The Light at the End of the Underground Tunnel

This photo was taken from my canoe while exploring the underground Park River in Hartford, CT. The river runs for three miles, in pure darkness, underneath the capitol city. It was forced underground by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940's. This photo was captured as we neared the end of our underground journey, seeing the light for the first time in three miles as we made our exit into the Connecticut river. This location is 30 minutes from my home, but I was unaware of it until reading on the National Geographic piece on rivers that were forced underground.
