We came upon this elephant shortly after its birth, in Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania. The female elephants that gathered around the baby were tossing dirt onto its still-wet body to mask the scent from predators. Notice that the ears are still plastered to the sides of its head, having just passed through the birth canal. All the females were gently reaching out with their trunks to sniff, touch and explore the newborn.
