This is a natural phenomenon which occurs when warm water from the river meets the cold winter air, forming ice crystals on the trees. Jilin Province is very cold in winter. The climate there is below -25C/-13F at this time of year.In 1937, Chinese built a hydroelectric dam at Songhua Lake. Water coming out from the hydroelectric station is above freezing even in the coldest days. That big difference in temperature creat the natural phenomenon of ice-rimmed trees in winter.
