Black Swallowtail Caterpillar

Category: Nature

Photo and caption by Airan Wright

My daughters found this caterpillar eating our rooftop garden tomato plants. We took it in and fed it and, after a while, it made a cocoon. And then nothing happened. And nothing continued to happen for the rest of summer and all through a freezing Chicago winter. Then, the following summer, it hatched into a beautiful butterfly to everyone's surprise!

Location: Chicago, IL
