Races Across the Tracks

The old railroad tracks in Cleveland, Miss. are symbolic of an unofficial border that divides the town between black and white, the way it has been for decades. Upon moving to Cleveland, I noticed that I rarely saw different races walking streets together — segregated street life and segregated neighborhoods are still the norm. I shot this photo towards the north, with the subjects facing the directions of the town's division. Mississippi has come a long way with civil right issues, and the potential for future integration is promising.
