Injured Northern Flicker

My husband found this bird in our backyard garden. He couldn't walk or fly, so we made him a little home in a box to protect him from the neighbourhood cats and owls. During the day we'd let him sit in the grass, or held him up in our cherry tree where he'd gobble up insects. We hoped with some rest and nurture his injuries would heal, but unfortunately he passed away 24 hours later.
