A Backyard Photo Shoot with a Cooper's Hawk

Category: Nature

Photo and caption by Megan Sheehan

This beautiful Cooper's Hawk landed on my back fence on October 5th. He'd stopped by my yard before, but never stayed long enough for me to grab my camera and get a shot. Well, this time he stayed for almost 10 minutes! My yard is home to many birds and a few chipmunks, so he was definitely hunting. I was so excited he stayed that long, I ended up snapping 50 pictures of him! I shot through the bay-window, crouching and creeping to keep from scaring him off! You can see his great, imposing size in this photo. This was an awesome "backyard birding" moment! (No small creatures were harmed!!)
