The Climb

This photo was taken on a trip to the Arctic via Svalbard, Norway. We specifically went to see polar bears, and this sighting was our biggest surprise. As we rode in our zodiacs to go see a small bay encircled by a giant ice cap, several hundred feet high, I noticed a spec slowly moving up atop the edge of the ice cap. A closer look revealed it was a polar bear! Even our guides couldn't explain why an adult polar bear was wandering that high above the sea.
Location: Svalbard Archipelago, Norway
