With ragged clothes and only a piece of material to keep her warm, her piercing gaze caught my attention. Her skin was dry and rough from the mountainous climate and the malnutrition was taking its toll. She was wearing a headband as a gift from the medical/dental team who aided her village. As i spoke to her in Spanish, she only nodded that she knew a few words in the language. I didn't know many words in "Quiche," her native Mayan dialect but managed to accomplish this... Su-a-be? (what's your name?) She shyly whispered... Estrella (star). I'll never forget that name.
