A Suburb of Paradise

Moorea, where I shot this photograph, and Bora Bora 160 miles away, are frequently cited as the two most beautiful islands in the world — suburbs of Paradise. Moreover, the lovely Polynesians inhabiting the islands appear to step out of Paul Gauguin's paintings. No wonder he chose to abandon France and settle in the French Polynesian Island of Hiva Oa. His simple grave is close to that of the mid-20th century Belgian-French crooner, Jacques Brel, who also moved to Polynesia, but 60 years later.
