Derelict Water Boats - Deception Island, Antarctic Peninsula
Category: Places
Photo and caption by Michael Sheppard
The water boats are part of the remains of the old whaling station on Deception Island off the Antarctic Peninsula. They were used to transfer fresh water (ice/snow) from the island to the whaling ships when the island was a base for the whaling industry from 1906 to 1931. The island is in fact the caldera of a volcano which had a major eruption in 1969 – hence the bleak black volcanic ash and snow white background. This photo was taken in March 2012 during a visit by the MS Expedition.
Location: Deception Island, South Shetland, Antarctic Peninsula
