After School in Kakuyuni

While visiting a friend at the Kakuyuni School for the Deaf in Kenya, I did my best to get to know her students. Every one of them was clever, passionate, and kind, and I will never forget the time I spent learning from them. One day after class, the older students planted maize and okra behind the school while a troupe of curious nursery students romped about. This photograph captures a deceptively calm moment from that afternoon. When I saw it later, I was taken aback by the way the afternoon sky sparkles in the girl's brown eyes and so perfectly matches her blue dress.
