At the market of Yangshuo, in addition to the trade of fruits, spices, chicken and ducks, it is still practiced the butchery of dogs and cats. The consumption of these animals, nowadays in China, is not widespread but mostly confined to the rural areas of the country, and the degree to which it is deemed to be socially acceptable has now become extremely contested, with International organization, as well as Chinese animal groups and pet-owners, condemning the practice.
