We were driving through the largest desert in Europe, Sprengisandur on Iceland, when we met a group of riders on their way north. Riding has been the most important mean of transportation in Iceland ever since the days of the Vikings and it was not until the mid 1980´s that it was possible to drive a car all the way around the island. Icelanders are very proud of their pure bred, sturdy little horse. Import of horses has been prohibited since the 11th century and a horse that leaves the country can never return!
