Phoenix Arizona is home to very high profile dust storms. The thunderstorms of our monsoon season drop cold air out of their centers and this blast of air picks up the desert dust into dramatic heights and densities. These outflows laden with dust are called Haboob's. We Arizonans share these types of storms with the people of north Africa, hence the name.
