I was blown away by the color in Trinidad, and the solid panels of bright color that I found on every building. Speaking of Cuba’s colonial past, I could not help but think as I meandered through town that these streets had once been walked by Hernan Cortés, who stopped to recruit volunteers to join him on a voyage to find a city of gold he heard of in Mexico and plundered by English pirates from Jamaica multiple times. It was a reminder of Cuba’s place within the regions of both the Caribbean and Latin America and what an important part Cuba has played in the histories of both.
