Monhegan Island is located 10 miles off the coast of Maine. The home of Samoset and where Captain John Smith moored up in 1614. In 1914 the famous seascape painter Frederick Waugh walked in the woods and drew pictures of the sticks with faces on them he called Munes. Almost 100 years later our family went in search of the Munes on Monhegan where this photo was captured. The faces are a result of torn branches of the wind swept Spruce trees from the storms hitting this island. The appearance of the naturally occurring gnome like faces captures the mystical experience of this island.

Location: Monhegan, Monhegan Island, Maine, United States
