Njeda was born nearly blind, suffering from bilateral cataracts. His 15-year-old mother abandoned him a few weeks after his birth. Njeda is being raised in a mud and cow dung hut by his grandmother on a Maasai group ranch in Kenya. Due to a generous donation, Njeda was given corrective surgery on both eyes. This photo was taken following the removal of his bandages, within a few moments of him seeing for the first time. Njeda is gazing at his grandmother’s smiling face.
