Charge of the Berbers - Fantasia Festival, Rural Morocco

A dozen Berber horsemen charged across the red earth, firing their rifles in unison at the midday sun. Behind me a toothless woman flicked her tongue in loud ululation as their galloping hooves stirred up dust and shrouded us in a mist of blood-coloured gun-smoke. I was less then 2 hours from the relative modernity of Marrakesh, but here in Berber country - the wild rural Morocco unseen by tourists - I was immersed in another world entirely.
