I took this photo walking across a bamboo bridge, overlooking the shoreline where the red delta earth meets the stillness of the Mekong River, and as the sun began to set in Kampong Cham--the town where my father was born and experienced his boyhood. As I imagined the kind of mischief, joy, and trials my own father amassed here, I was humbled by the overwhelming kindness and the abundance of smiles around me. This photo exemplifies the resilience and the fortitude of a community that has persevered over genocide, loss, and dislocation, and still emerges with a rare compassion.
