I was fortunate to meet these wonderful creatures recently as part of a volunteer program at the Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica. Located on the Caribbean Coast near Limon, the sanctuary is home to over one hundred sloths who, due to deforestation and urbanization are brought to the Sanctuary sick, injured or orphaned. These incredible animals have unique personalities and are often misunderstood, while they are slow moving they are intelligent and gentle animals. As sanctuary founder Judy Arroyo (who took in her first orphaned sloth over 20 years ago) puts it 'to know them is to love them'
