Khovsgol province of northwest Mongolia

The Khovsgol aimag, a province located in northwest Mongolia and surrounding Lake Khovsgol, is one of the most beautiful areas of the country. It is mountainous with open space surrounded by forests and vistas of snowcapped peaks. In late September, the larch trees are golden and the days have extreme temperature fluctuations. Earlier in the day in the taiga near the Siberian border, it was sunny. By late afternoon, further south, we entered a white-out. The blinding snowstorm, only enabled us to see a large dark figure slowly make its way into the forest. It was a yak.
