I visited my hometown of Brooklyn, NYC in the Summer of 2012. We walked thru the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. This tree is quite healthy. It's bark is supposed to look like this. But it looks like a male human character who is dying to find it's mate. He appears to be stretching his chest out as a call to the female character trees.
