Pigeon Feed Woman
Photo and caption by Murielle O'Brien
Two young girls and a woman sell pigeon feed outside the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the only remaining Buddhist temple in Ulaanbaatar after collectivization under Mongolia's Soviet regime. The bright colors of their clothes and the fierce resilience in their eyes rebound against the aired, monochromatic backdrop. This passionate defiance, my native friend Zola believes, is the ticket to Mongolia's future success as a democracy. It is as if through time and political upheaval, the spirit their founder Ghengis Khan has persisted in the Mongolian people.
