Semana Santa in Seville brings with it the start of the bull fighting season. Stands packed with locals ranging in age from eight to eighty, all dressed in their Easter best fill la Plaza del Toros. In the heat of the afternoon sun they sit, ensconced in a profound silence that is only broken by the occasional, monosyllabic, and unison "olè"-- a religious chant that touches some primordial part of whomever is around to hear it. Though loved and detested equally fervently by observers, bullfighting is a quintessential part of Spanish history and tradition.
