Salt

Evaporation of sea water to produce salt occurs many places in the world, although not often on the scale seen at the salt pans of Bonaire. Even in the late afternoon, the pink tint of the pond is clearly visible. This pink is due to proliferating halophilic archaebacteria, very possibly the oldest life form on Earth, and according to some astrobiologists, a life form that may be present on Mars.
Location: Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles
