Children of leather factory workers are playing in the slums of Kanpur, India. There is no waste management and the (ground)water supply is contaminated with chromium. Most of the children are also factory workers with up to 10h per day and hardly any salary. - Kanpur, "Leather City of the World", is the center of indian leather production and is home for over 400 tanneries. For cost reasons the leather is tanned with highly toxic, carcinogenic Chromium(VI) oxide. In conjunction with water it is corrosive and if swallowed it can cause kidney damage, infertility and genetic defects.
