A plume of gas rises from the incandescent crater of Santiaguito volcano, Guatemala, with cities and the Pacific Ocean lying in the distance. This 30-second exposure was captured from the summit of Santa Maria volcano, about a mile above the active Santiaguito lava dome. The unique perspective is one reason that an international scientific expedition set up still, high-speed video, and infrared cameras here to capture the regular (several per day) eruptions of this spectacular volcano.
Location: Santa Maria Volcano, Guatemala
