This shot of a grazing coastal brown bear never fails to make me smile. It's slightly raining, and this bear looks so happy and refreshed with his head up, without a care in the world! The photo was taken in Kukak Bay, Alaska, on a trip with my mother for her annual family reunion in June 2012. Bears rely heavily on their sense of smell and stick their nose in the air frequently to sense what is around them. So in reality, as we were standing about 25m away, he was probably just smelling us, mid-chew.
