Cape Town's new stadium was built in record time for the FIFA 2010 World Cup Tournament hosted by South Africa. The construction went ahead against all objections by the local residents and other city ratepayers who were footing the construction bill. There were many concerns that once the World Cup was over the stadium would sit empty with the maintenance costs exceeding the income from other events. Sadly this was an accurate prediction and the stadium now sits empty for a lot of the time.
