Volcano at Dusk

While travelling in Central Ecuador, Tungurahua Volcano erupted, sending ash (which is more like coarse sand) and pyroclastic material into the air and down the mountainside. Local people were evacuated. This photo was taken at dusk, about 20 miles from the volcano. I was woken at 2am the following morning by a guide who had heard the volcano erupting and took me to another part of the building to see it. I sat curled up in the window seat watching the bright orange material snaking down the mountainside - while friends and family back in the UK were watching the Royal Wedding!
Location: Tungurahua, near Banos, Ecuador
