Sand Hill Cranes Roosting

The afternoon we arrived at the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge we were greeted by blustry winds and a constant cacophony of crane chatter. Droves of Sand Hill Cranes stop here in the spring during their annual migration from New Mexico to Idaho. These carnes seemed to be settling for the evening while overhead several groups were gliding in from foraging in nearby fields and shallow waterways.
