after climbing mt tuvurvur, an active volcano in papua new guinea, my sister-and-law and carries my 5 month old nephew down the darkened sands to the beach. the sand was blackened from the volcanic ash, with no signs of life, apart from the hollowed shells of dead crabs. oddly, when, the sand looked like waves of the ocean rolling beneath us, and her pink shoes and top were the only bit of colour all around us.
