tucked away in the baining mountains on east new britain island in papua new guinea, young men of the toloi tribe begin a tradition of dancing in and through fires to advance into manhood. with their bodies painted black, grass woven around their legs, and a haunting mask, they kick through the embers of the fire to sound of hollow, bamboo drums beating and resounding through the raining night air.
