The memorial at the Ninth Fort, lit by a nearby housing estate in the misty hour before dawn. Standing 34m high, the sculpture was designed by Alfonsas Ambraziunas who lived near the fort as a boy. After Germany's invasion of the USSR the Nazis used the fort as an execution site. Alfonsas' aunt lived near the fort and harboured several escapees under the floorboards of her home during the Nazi occupation.
