This photo shows a sulphur miner appearing out of the toxic fumes at Kawah Ijen, East Java, Indonesia. Kawah Ijen is an active volcano in East Java. At the bottom of the crater, by the bright blue sulphuric lake are hundreds of men mining sulphur amid clouds of poisonous gases. Loading their baskets with up to 100kg of sulphur, they start the arduous scramble over loose rocks out of the crater. Once complete, they are faced with a 3km walk to a weighing station, where they are likely to receive no more than $10 per day for their efforts.
