Red deer (Cervus elaphus) entered the Latvian territory about 9 thousand years ago, but due to various circumstances disappeared about a thousand years ago. Nowadays, thanks to the people initiative and effort, this animal is returned to the Latvian nature and become an integral part of the wild fauna in most of the Latvian territory. The most memorable time for deer life occurs every autumn, during the rut, which culminates in the male mating battles. Only the winner - the strongest and most powerful male deer - may transfer their outstanding genes to future generations.
