In 1788 Captain Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack at Sydney Cove. His arrival with 11 convict ships was both ignoble and auspicious. From these humble beginnings sprang a nation. Each year under the summer sun, Australians, like two-year-old Denali, celebrate Australia Day on January 26 by enjoying a public holiday and savouring what makes this country great.
