A portrait of Ram Kumar Tamang, a 36 year-old porter who plies the route from Lukla to Namche Bazaar in the Solukhumbu district in Nepal. Because there are no roads for motor vehicles in the region, supplies are either carried by men or animals such as horses and yaks from the airport in Lukla to the various towns and villages in the area. On this occasion, Mr Tamang had a 100-kg load of cases of beer on his back. The bald spot on his head is a result of years of supporting the weight on his back with a strip of cloth tied to his head.
