Valley of the Moon

Photo and caption by Alex Richter

This photo was taken in Wadi Rum, Jordan, also known in Arabic as 'Valley of the Moon', which was inhabited in prehistoric times by the Nabateans, and later by 'Lawrence of Arabia'. In this dramatic landscape T. E. Lawrence launched the Arab Revolt of 1917-18 and reshaped the Middle East. This photo was captured at the entrance to Wadi Rum on the first day of a camping trip as the sun began to lower. Wadi Rum remains as one of the most inspiring landscapes I have ever inhabited. One can't help but think that it may have inspired Mr. Lawrence during his own 'Arab Spring'.

Location: Wadi Rum, Jordan
