POLAR BEAR - FURY & HECLA STRAIT
Category: Nature

This was a big year for polar bears around this area. They must be hungry after fasting for the past four or five months so they are checking out the community, seal meat caches, fermented walrus meat caches (iganuuk); and the dump. That afternoon there were a few bears just off shore near a couple of cabins, but when the Conservation Officer fired a couple of cracker shells to scare them off, about 8 or 10 more bears became visible amongst the broken sea ice that was left over from last winter and which had been driven up on the north shore of the island during the previous week or two.
