October 2012: Portugal may be having a hard time economically but its Algarve beaches are as spectacularly beautiful as ever... and it costs nothing to catch the atlantic waves if you are a local and have a board. The fleeting and improbable spectacle of a human being surfing captures me totally for reasons I cannot fully articulate. I later discover a helpful Einstein aphorism: “It would be possible to describe everything scientifically, but it would make no sense; it would be without meaning, as if you described a Beethoven symphony as a variation of wave pressure.”
