In the silent darkness of an abandoned silo, and for many years unseen by human eyes, a seed takes root and begins to grow. Against all odds, the tree matures until at last its leafy crown emerges into the sunlight. While driving in rural Missouri, I happened upon this small miracle of nature and was struck by the tenacity of life.
