This photograph was taken in a very small, rural village in Northern Madagascar. I was photographing all of the children, and this young girl gave me a huge toothy grin when it was her turn. Before I could take the shot, the other children started poking and teasing her because she was missing her two front teeth, and they said her smile looked funny. She refused to smile for the camera for weeks afterward, she was too embarrassed by their taunting.
