Swimming on Air
Opaque stockings and sturdy shoes completed the ensemble, as modeled by this Red Cross swimming instructor, emulating the frog on a piano stool in 1900. She may have had good reason to teach her class on dry land: Outfits like hers weighed as much as 22 pounds (10 kilograms) when waterlogged.
