Froggy Friends Photograph by Bradley Thompson, Zionsville, Indiana
The Thompson family acquired Buster and Ned—two dumpy tree frogs—when kids' allergies precluded fluffier pets. "We're always asked if they're fake," says mom Betty Thompson. "They're real!"
Photo Critique by Susan Welchman, Photography Editor
We selected the photo of the two frogs not only because of the plastic quality of the skin, but because you know that they're real frogs. We can't imagine why they're on the windowsill, but they're staying put, and they're enjoying the light or something about looking out that window. It's not that the exposure or colors are so beautiful, but it's really what's occurring in the picture that gives you delight. And the photographer just happened to catch a moment, and that's what it's all about. If you haven't got fabulous light, your subjects have to be doing something that really captures your imagination, makes you ask a question, makes you laugh, or makes you wonder. Those four little frog paws on the windowsill are just too much.
