Apples in the Morning Photograph by Hrvoje Glavota, Greenwich, New York
There is no written recipe for the family's apple strudel. So Hrvoje Glavota's wife, Sarah Begley, asked her visiting mother-in-law to teach her how to prepare the pastry. "She and my mother made the dough the night before," says Glavota, a 37-year-old geotechnical engineer. "The next morning, I saw Sarah sitting there in the light peeling apples, and I just thought she looked so perfect."
Photo Critique By Susan Welchman, Illustrations Editor
We don't ordinarily publish just one frame, but this photo of a young woman peeling apples was our favorite for the theme "Around the Table." The peacefulness of her clothes, her posture, and the room itself are all very earthy. There's just a hint of the pie plate holding the peeled apples, and there's a nice touch of green. I suppose the only thing I would complain about is the blue and red rug, which seems to disturb the frame a bit. But the background with the vertical stripes on the wall and the tan top cutting it in half is out of focus just enough. The long hair, long arm, long skirt, and long background add to the image's vertical orientation. The light is nice on the back of her hair, but her face isn't in shadow. It's a beautifully executed picture with a good feeling.
