Spotless and Sparkling Photograph by Jennifer Surgent, Daytona Beach, Florida
Hands, feet, and dried coconuts are a tried and true way to clean and put a mirror shine on the dining room floor at Bethany House Orphanage, home to boys and girls on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. "These boys had just finished lunch," says photographer Jennifer Surgent, who was visiting the orphanage with the Florida-based Joy and Care-Giving Foundation in an effort to raise awareness of the children's needs. "They just jumped right to the task without anyone asking. I think it was more like play for them rather than work."
Photo Critique By Susan Welchman, Illustrations Editor
You can see an odd custom of polishing the floor with coconuts. The three boys are busy at work while another kid is hanging off a table in the background. It was inventive of the photographer to duck down and see what these kids are doing and to make a photograph at an odd time. It's the way the boys are going about their work with their flip-flops hung on their arms that makes you smile. The photographer thought of something other than sitting at a table and eating. She thought of being under the table working.
