They’re those corners of the world that you just can’t get out of your mind. Places so special, or just plain weird, that they take on their own personalities. National Geographic scoured the United States to include just such places in its ZipUSA series.

This month go door to door in 10013, a New York neighborhood next to the World Trade Center that sets a gold standard for dedication, goodwill, and the spirit of patriotism.

Other zips in the works range from a small Minnesota town that gave birth to a music superstar to a Nebraska town that offers a fresh start to troubled kids.
