Like a drape of golden lace, the lower lid of this Nyctimystes frog rises to cover the eye when the frog is at rest. No one knows what purpose this membrane serves. Some biologists speculate that it breaks up the surface of the eye to camouflage it from predators, while still allowing the frog to scan its surroundings.
